Major Projects Management Office - West

About MPMO-WEST

Welcome to the Major Projects Management Office–West (MPMO-West) website.

The MPMO-West is a new office of the federal government, reporting to the Minister of Natural Resources.  Located in Vancouver, BC, the office will serve as a single window for First Nations to engage with the Government of Canada on issues related to West Coast energy infrastructure development.

The creation of the MPMO-West supports the Government’s strategy for Responsible Resource Development, particularly with respect to enhancing Aboriginal participation in economic opportunities and strengthening environmental protection.  Across Canada, hundreds of major projects are underway or planned within the next decade, including many in the West.  New investments, to the tune of around $650 billion, are creating unprecedented opportunities for growth and development – including for First Nations.

The MPMO-West will coordinate activities across multiple Government of Canada departments to support the involvement of First Nations in West Coast energy infrastructure development.  This includes coordinating extensive engagement with First Nations on the West Coast to better understand their perspectives on issues related to energy projects, and working with other federal departments to identify concrete actions to address community interests and concerns.  Particular emphasis will be placed on the following areas:

  • Business opportunities: enabling First Nations entrepreneurs, small businesses and communities to take advantage of business opportunities and create lasting prosperity.
  • Employment and training: increasing direct and indirect employment opportunities for First Nations through training and skills development.
  • Environmental safety: working with First Nations to address issues of greatest concern, including marine and pipeline safety. Recently-announced, major initiatives to build world-class marine and pipeline safety systems will be further enhanced by facilitating the direct participation of First Nations that have specific perspectives and knowledge regarding the local environment.

The MPMO-West will also serve as the secretariat for a new tripartite forum. Working with the BC Government and BC First Nations organizations, this forum will provide a venue for senior federal, provincial and First Nations leaders to share information, identify common interests and align efforts on issues related to the development of energy infrastructure and natural resources on Canada’s West Coast.

By working together with First Nations, provinces, industry and other stakeholders, Canada can turn this moment of opportunity into long-term prosperity for local communities. That is why the Government of Canada is committed, through the establishment of the MPMO-West and other actions, to facilitate and encourage First Nations participation in this opportunity for economic development and environmental protection.
